Why is rear glass with a defroster or antenna a different job from side glass?

Frost Fighter Technical Bulletin 118 (The PipeKnife Company, 2020) says estimated grid resistance “should lie between 0.5 and 4 ohms” and calculated current “should be well under 25 amps in most cases.” U.S. Patent 4,065,848 (1976) put a typical 12-volt, 200-watt rear network “of the order of 1 ohm,” or about one-half ohm at 400 watts. Its sheet says to be conservative with the dial, pass the gun on the outside in circular motions, and continue “until the window is warm to the touch.” Chemical Guys holds a steamer or gun “approximately six inches from the glass,” then answers its FAQ with 6 to 8 inches, never still for more than a few seconds. 3M’s October 2025 Crystalline bulletin lists service temperature from −40°C to +70°C, “not for extended periods of time at the extremes.” +70°C is 158°F. Oshark’s 200–300°F band sits above that ceiling. Warm-to-the-touch sits well below it. The overlap among the DIY guides is 4 to 6 inches on side glass and 6 to 8 inches once a grid is in play. Excess heat can stress glass, cook door seals, and smear adhesive.
How do you lift old or 20-year-old film without shredding it into glue?
Film age is a poor predictor of adhesive condition, and the published clocks do not match. The legal reason some of this film is coming off is visible-light transmission, and the statutes do not use one number.
